I read these a few years ago and absolutely love them. Jane Kirkpatrick is an amazing writer who keeps your interest without overdoing the specifics. 
It is an amazing story of Women who set out with their families to go west, on the way they are struck with sickness and all the men end up passing away. These Women keep going on and helping each other. It is based on a true story. I thoroughly enjoyed them and couldn't put the books down. The series is definitely worth the read.
